Port of Long Beach is one of America’s premier seaports and a trailblazer in goods movement and environmental stewardship. More than US$180bn in trade moves through Long Beach, making it the second-busiest seaport in the United States. The Port supports more than 30,000 jobs in Long Beach, 316,000 jobs throughout Southern California and 1.4 million jobs throughout the United States. Specialised terminals move consumer goods, petroleum, automobiles, cement, lumber, steel and other products.
Brief
Over the past several years, The Port of Long Beach has embarked on a significant amount of new construction, including the Gerald Desmond Bridge Replacement; Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility; Anaheim Street Improvement Project; and the Green Port Gateway. The Port’s construction management team required support and training in the areas of claims avoidance, management and mitigation during this critical time of major capital improvements.
What we did
HKA provided claims support on several Port projects, resulting in the resolution of lingering disputes that were otherwise heading towards litigation. The Port selected HKA to develop and present a training programme to their internal construction management team on topics relating to claims avoidance, process and claims mitigation.
Outcomes
HKA successfully supported the Port with claims management, mitigation and avoidance consulting and brought in industry-leading experts to train their team. The training resulted in improved skills and processes that lowered the risk of future disputes.
"I have personally worked with Adam Winegard, Ken Baker and Tom Driscoll of HKA. On each occasion, they continually exceed my expectations. HKA staff have done an excellent job of jumping into the issues and working with the team to develop solutions to avoid, mitigate and resolve technical, schedule and cost changes, claims and disputes."
