HKA, a leading global consultancy in risk mitigation, dispute resolution, expert witness, and litigation support services, announces that Michael Berta has joined the firm as a Principal in the claims and dispute resolution group based out of San Francisco, CA.

Michael has more than 25 years of experience working in the construction industry. He is a construction cost and damages expert who has testified in the Armed Services Board of Contract Appeals and AAA Arbitrations. He has consulted on matters involving project delay, labor inefficiency, contract compliance, and cost overrun issues primarily related to large and sophisticated construction projects. He has authored expert reports and provided expert testimony on cost and delay damages and the application of Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) cost principles to construction claims. He has also participated in and presented at numerous mediations, prepared and analysed many large change orders and REAs, and assisted clients with settlement negotiations.

Michael brings his vast experience in commercial litigation matters, including the analysis of claims for cost recovery and lost profits to HKA and has experience working in the construction industry as an assistant superintendent, where he gained valuable hands-on field experience while working on a variety of residential and municipal construction projects.

Mike’s claims and dispute and resolution experience in the construction industry, along with his expert witness experience is a welcome addition to the HKA team. We are very excited to have him join our team.

Prior to joining HKA, Michael started Berta Consulting Group and has held senior positions at FTI Consulting, Exponent, and Navigant Consulting. Michael has presented on construction cost audits and damages to university and industry groups such as the University of California, Berkeley, Stanford University, and the AACEI. He earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of California, Berkeley’s Haas School of Business.
